Women's Hockey at the Olympics

USA and Canada played a great game yesterday. Canada won Gold and USA won Silver.
You'd think any team would be happy and proud. Yes, it's hard to lose. But this is the Olympics. How many teams get to play there at all, let alone win a medal?
Yet, I was disappointed and ashamed of the USA's team. I thought they displayed poor sportsmanship at the medal ceremony. Their sad faces at "only" winning Silver was in poor taste, in my estimation.
And when one of the payers said later that "...It sucks to win silver.", I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Then give up your paltry Silver Medal to someone who will appreciate it. Disgusting.

  1. Oh, stop it. Give the kid a break. She was just disappointed at losing, that's all. When you work that hard to reach the top and fail, it hurts. Cut her a little slack and don't make a federal case out of her comment.

When you think about it, she's right. You don't get a silver medal or trophy for winning, you get it because you lost. That is the memory you have, losing your last game, and that is what sucks. It's a cruel outcome of the single elimination, tournament-style format. When you make it all the way to the championship game, it an unfortunate fact of life that for one there is elation and for another there is disappointment beyond measure that no consolation prize will assuage. So let the winners have their moment, and give the losers a little room to express a little grieving. It's only human.

  2. First of all, if you are going to comment, post a profile.
Secondly, these were the Olympics. They were representing their country on an international level. This wasn't a school yard game. There is no room for slack. And Silver is nothing to sneeze at. It's still a medal. They lost one game. They still beat everyone else but Canada. That is still something to be proud of. It didn't "suck". They can be disappointed. They just need to be mindful of what they say when it is being recorded.
